Il 12 novembre 1972 a Genova c’erano 85 sale cinematografiche,
un numero consistente, se paragonato con le 49 sale concentrate in 24 cinema
presenti a Genova oggi. Lo scarto tra queste cifre è l’indicatore
della profonda trasformazione avvenuta non solo nei modi e nelle forme dell’intrattenimento,
ma anche nel tessuto urbano della città. Cosa è accaduto a questi
spazi? Cosa sono diventati? Da cosa sono stati sostituiti nella loro funzione
di spettacolo e socializzazione? Alcuni esistono ancora, altri sono stati completamente
trasformati, divenendo supermercati, banche, grandi magazzini, palestre ed altro
ancora.
Il progetto “12.11.1972” parte da questo scarto e da queste interrogativi,
costruendo un dispositivo narrativo che testimonia il processo di trasformazione
del territorio urbano di Genova, e più in generale della città
contemporanea. Il lavoro si articola in tre parti: schede, mappe, immagini.
The title of the project indicates a randomly selected date
in which the local newspaper of Genoa listed 85 movie theaters that showed a
wide array of movies.
The project explores the actual condition of these theaters, which have almost
all disappeared, altering conspicuously the social and cultural landscape of
the city. A map, locating the various cinemas through the entire body of the
city, including peripheral and popular neighborhoods, a series of cards, where
a résumé of the movie displayed that day collides with its actual
anonymous condition of garage, supermarket, hair-salon or pizzeria and a continuous
video projection of fragments of the movies showed that day constitute a testimony
of urban transformation and decadence, where the extinction of this particular
cultural and architectural program is one among several symptoms.
Today the cinemas in Genoa are 24.
